What's in Season in the Maritimes by Month

As an avid hobby gardener living in a cold environment, I always appreciate knowing what I can safely plant in my region. For those of you who don't garden (you should)! this is a helpful guide on what produce will be at it's prime when you're shopping locally or if you can't grow all the food you want to eat in your own garden.

If you're an avid local produce consumer, even in our harsh climate, the Maritimes has loads of wonderful farms, CSAs and growers. Here's a guide on how to get the best produce locally while supporting our incredible farmers!

    The Best Produce by Month

While putting together this resource, I researched a lot. Some great tools for home gardeners that I used to put together this guide are The Old Farmer's Almanac, New Brunswick Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables from The Spruce Eats and New Brunswick's Harvest Guide from Pick Your Own.

Just to be clear, this isn't a guide on when to plant certain crops, but a guide on what produce will be at it's peak in the New Brunswick region at all times of the year. The goal is to make it easier to shift your consumption to more local sources while enjoying produce at it's peak.

A quick note that some of the produce may be listed in a month it's not typically harvested (mostly December - February). This is because heartier winter produce stores well but few things can survive the cold winter climate. This is your buying guide, not a harvesting guide! Objects that are bolded are available through cold storage but not technically in season in most parts of the Maritimes.

While we're on the topic of the Maritimes, be sure to check out the new recipe for the Maritime favourite cocktail, the Dave Matthews!
